Meet an Austin Original
Watercolor artist Mary Doerr is a lifelong Texan well known for her paintings of Austin, the Texas Hill Country and the Southwest. She pursued her childhood dream of becoming an artist by returning to college in mid-life to earn bachelor’s and master’s degrees in fine arts at The University of Texas at Austin, where she studied under Michael Frary.
Since then, she’s dedicated her artistic career to capturing the atmosphere and spirit of the places and things she loves. Her subjects range from the twinkling skyline of Austin to desert light on adobe, and from the Driskill to the Broken Spoke. Her body of work includes numerous originals as well as 134 images in print that made her a favorite at local art festivals.
Mary’s work is also available in card sets, and those images have become touchstones for many native Austinites, reminding us of places both here and gone. Thanks to her watercolor classes, lots of Austin artists know that an authentic Texas sky starts with a deft wash of gold. Whether we’re her family, her collectors or her students, we’ve learned from Mary Doerr how to appreciate the little details.
Mary’s work can be found on this site and at the heart of our collection at Images of Austin. She retired in 2007 to her ranch in Central Texas, but can probably be found from time to time consulting at the gallery.
